Charles Turner (bass-baritone) and Nancy Rexford (piano) - To Fortune

from Lucky Dip by Caitlin Rowley

/

about

To Fortune was written to a text by Robert Herrick, suggested by Charles Turner when he signed up for the RPM commission project. It turned out to be an ideal length and provided a little challenge for me as I don't usually work with rhyming texts. The song is driven by the voice, with the piano providing very quiet support to give depth and help the performer with pitching their entrances.

The score of To Fortune is included in the whole-album download package.

lyrics

Tumble me down, and I will sit
Upon my ruins, smiling yet;
Tear me to tatters, yet I’ll be
Patient in my necessity.
Laugh at my scraps of clothes, and shun
Me, as a fear’d infection;
Yet, scare-crow-like, I’ll walk as one
Neglecting thy derision.
